Iowa STEM School Partners will Pilot New Quality Pre-Apprenticeship Model
The Iowa Governor’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Advisory Council recently awarded four of Iowa’s STEM school partners, known as STEM BEST® (Business Engaging Students and Teachers) to pilot a new Quality Pre-Apprenticeship model. A portion of Iowa’s $1.8 million ApprenticeshipUSA State Expansion grant from the U.S. Department of Labor will fund the effort.
Iowa's Unemployment Rate Drops to 3.3 Percent in January
Iowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 3.3 percent in January. The state’s jobless rate was 3.8 percent one year ago. The U.S. unemployment rate increased to 4.8 percent in January.
IowaWORKS Offices Closed for Staff In-Service
IowaWORKS offices will be closed on Monday, February 20th for a staff in-service. Offices will reopen on Tuesday, February 21st.
Administrative offices located at 1000 E. Grand Avenue in Des Moines will remain open.
Branstad, Reynolds Announce State Workforce Development Board Subcommittee to Address Minority Unemployment
Governor Branstad and Lt. Governor Reynolds today announced a subcommittee of the State Workforce Development Board has been established to address disparities in the minority unemployment rate in Iowa. According to the latest Census information, Iowa’s statewide unemployment rate was 3.9 percent, while African Americans had an unemployment rate of 14.2 percent, Native Americans had a rate of 11 percent, Asian Americans had a rate of 5.3 percent (other pacific islanders had a rate of 13.6 percent) and Hispanic Americans had a rate of 8.1 percent for the same time period.
