Communications Engineering Company Starts Electronic Systems Technician Registered Apprenticeship Program

DES MOINES – Communications Engineering Company (CEC) in Hiawatha and the IowaWORKS Center in Cedar Rapids, together with the U.S. Department of Labor/Office of Apprenticeship, launched an Electronic Systems Technician Registered Apprenticeship called the Technical Career Advancement Program (TCAP).

A Registered Apprenticeship is employer-driven training combined with on-the-job learning and related classroom instruction. The program allows the Registered Apprentice to earn a paycheck from day one while learning. The Electronic Systems Technician Registered Apprenticeship is a four-year program focused on learning about audio visual, safety and security, and structured cabling career paths. Registered Apprenticeship opportunities are available in their Hiawatha, Des Moines and Davenport locations.

“We designed the TCAP to be an effective career advancement vehicle to arm its participants with the skills and experiences necessary to fill highly sought after technical and project lead roles, endorsed by the Department of Labor,” says Shereen Bender, CEC’s VP of People and Organizational Excellence.

CEC decided to offer the Technical Career Advancement Program to address an untapped need and train staff members to meet customers’ complex technology requirements. “Finding specialized talent is an industry-wide challenge, which this program helps us address,” says Rebecca Thomas, HR director for CEC.

Growing the number of Registered Apprentices in Iowa is one of the goals of a grant received by Iowa Workforce Development from the U.S. Department of Labor.

“TCAP allows us to focus on hiring the right people for our company while providing career-path training for our future leaders,” says Ryan Ringgenberg, CEC’s HR Generalist/Recruiter. “It’s a win for CEC, a win for TCAP participants, and, most importantly, a win for our customers.”
