IWD Announces Additional Benefits For Newell Rubbermaid and Whirlpool/Maytag Workers

DES MOINES – Iowa Workforce Development received word that Newell Rubbermaid workers in Centerville received an $857,668 National Emergency Grant (NEG). The grant will assist 150 workers who lost their job when the plant closed in September. The NEG funds will provide valuable reemployment services, including career counseling, skills training and job placement assistance.

Additionally, Iowa Workforce Development received word the US Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration granted an extension for the Trade Adjustment Assistance(TAA) program for Whirlpool/Maytag employees. This is welcomed news in Newton. The current TAA petition was set to expire on December 23rd. If an extension had not been granted, those individuals downsized after the 23rd, would not have received the extended benefits offered with TAA assistance.

“Being laid off from a job can be one of the most traumatic events an individual can experience. Both announcements will provide significant services for employees from both organizations. With the extension granted to Whirlpool/Maytag employees, all employees will have access to the extensive services provides through TAA benefits,” indicated Interim Workforce Development Director David Neil.

Traditional dislocated worker services supplemented by the National Emergency Grant include access to skills upgrading and training resources, interest assessment inventories and enhanced job placement assistance including targeted reemployment plans. When a location closes due to foreign trade effects, such as Whirlpool/Maytag, additional benefits may be available through TAA. These benefits include an additional extension of unemployment insurance benefits, job search allowances, medical insurance tax credits, and up to 104 weeks of training assistance.
