DES MOINES, IA – Cory Kelly has been hired as communications director for Iowa Workforce Development, the state agency that supports Iowans in employment services and health, safety and employment laws.

He replaces Courtney Maxwell Greene, who was promoted to Operations Division Administrator in December. In her new role, Greene will continue to oversee communications as well as all of the workforce service programs that help Iowans find employment and receive the training needed to meet employers’ workforce needs.

Kelly has 16 years of experience overseeing complex internal and external communication programs, leading public and media relations initiatives, and crafting and implementing policy at the state and federal levels. Previously, he served as director of strategic communications and marketing for the Iowa Medical Society. A Marine veteran, Kelly also spent six years as the director of corporate communications for the Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division and three years as the lead public affairs instructor for the Defense Information School for Visual Information and Public Affairs.

Kelly earned his MBA from the University of Iowa Tippie School of Management and is currently pursuing his certificate in project management. He received his undergraduate degree in journalism and mass communications from Drake University.

He is active in the community, serving as the communications committee chair for the Rotary Club of Des Moines, NOVAs committee member for the American Marketing Association Iowa chapter and an institute committee member for Public Relations Society of America Central Iowa chapter as well as numerous military organizations.
