SPENCER, IOWA – The Lakes Area Employers’ Council and Iowa Workforce Development are hosting an informational session about Federal and State Child Labor Laws. This session will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2006, from 1:15 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Gull Point State Park Lodge, Hwy 86, Wahpeton, IA. Employers in all occupations, human resource personnel and staff who hire teens ages 14-17 are invited to attend. School personnel who are “Issuing Officers” are also encouraged to attend to learn about recent changes in completion of the Iowa Child Work Permit.
Guest speakers will include Rich Tesarek, Assistant District Director of the Omaha, NE Area Office of the U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division. He will present information relating to federal child labor laws. Gail Sheridan Lucht will present information about Iowa’s child labor laws. Ms. Sheridan Lucht is an attorney specializing in employment and child labor law with Iowa Workforce Development.
The topics to be discussed at the seminar include a general overview on:
• State of Iowa Child Labor Laws and Federal Child Labor Laws: what’s the difference?
• Do all employers need to comply with Child Labor Laws?
• What hours and occupations can teens ages 14-17 work?
• Iowa Child Labor Work Permits: who needs one, where to get it and how to fill it out?
• What are the penalties for non-compliance?
This is a “hold-harmless” informational session; any and all questions are welcome.

The Lakes Area Employers’ Council is a local employer group supported by Iowa Workforce Development Region 3, and is part of the statewide Employers’ Council of Iowa system.
