Independent Contractor or Employee – Get Your Classification Right

ORANGE CITY, IOWA – Iowa Workforce Development and the Upper Northwest Iowa Employers’ Council will present a free, one hour session on October 22, 2009, to help contractors determine whether a worker is an independent contractor or an employee. “Independent Contractor or Employee: Get Your Classification Right!” will be held in Room 2 in the lower level of the Orange City Area Health System Downtown Campus, 400 Central Avenue NW, Orange City, on Thursday, October 22, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. There is no fee to attend.

The session will focus on how to determine whether a worker is an independent contractor or an employee. Getting the classification correct is critical for tax, wage, unemployment, workers’ compensation and other employment issues. Getting it wrong can cost an employer $$. A renewed enforcement emphasis by federal and state regulators requires that employers take a closer look at their classifications. Iowa Workforce Development Attorney Barbara Tapscott will present this hour long session using real life examples.
