Northeast Iowa ECI/DALMC/NICC/IWD Employment Law Hot Topics Education

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The Northeast Iowa Employers’ Council (ECI) in conjunction with Iowa Workforce Development (IWD), Dubuque Area Labor Management Council (DALMC), and Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) is offering a two hour educational presentation for employers and human resources professionals. Barbara Tapscott, an employment attorney with Iowa Workforce Development, will be presenting information on two employment law hot topics:

1) Terminations and Reductions in Force: Tough Questions in Tough Times
This session will focus on the troublesome questions employers face when making termination and reduction in force decisions, including discussion of the decision making process and related documentation.

2) Independent Contractor or Employee: Misclassification Can Cost an Employer $
This session will focus on how to determine whether a worker is an “independent contractor” or an “employee.” The classification is critical for tax, wage, unemployment, workers compensation, and other employment issues. A renewed enforcement emphasis requires employers to take a closer look.

These presentations will be offered at the NICC Calmar Campus on July 14, 2009 from 1-3 pm and again at the NICC Town Clock Center for Professional Development campus in Dubuque on July 15, 2009 from 9-11 am. The registration fee for either site is $19.00. To register for the Calmar site, please contact Maura Jones by phone at (563) 562-3263 ext. 399 or by email at jonesm3@nicc.edu . To register for the event in Dubuque, please contact Marie Blum at NICC by phone at (563) 557-8271 ext. 380 or by email at blumm@nicc.edu.

The Northeast IA Employer’s Council, supported by Iowa Workforce Development Region 1, including Dubuque, Delaware, Clayton, Fayette, Allamakee, Chickasaw, Howard, and Winneshiek counties is part of the statewide Employers’ Council of Iowa system. This council, in partnership with NICC, and DALMC provides both educational and networking opportunities for employers and human resource professionals.
