Independent Contractor or Employee: Get Your Classification Right!

SPENCER, IOWA – Iowa Workforce Development and the Lakes Area Employers’ Council will present “Independent Contractor or Employee: Get Your Classification Right!” on August 26, 2009.

This session will focus on how to determine whether a worker is an “independent contractor” or an “employee.” Getting the classification correct is critical for tax, wage, unemployment, workers’ compensation, and other employment issues. Getting it wrong can cost employers money. A renewed enforcement emphasis by federal and state regulators requires that employers take a closer look at their classifications. Iowa Workforce Development Attorney Barbara Tapscott will present this hour long session using “real life” examples. The session will begin at 12:30 p.m. at Iowa Lakes Community College in Spencer located at 1900 N. Grand, Spencer, Iowa.

All business owners, human resource professionals, personnel staff, attorneys, paralegals and payroll/accounting staff are invited to attend. There is no fee to attend, but pre-registration is requested for planning purposes by Friday August 21 to Bob Becker at (712) 262-1971 ext. 126 or

. This program has been approved for 1.0 (General) recertification credit hours towards PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI).

The Lakes Area Employers’ Council is a local employer group supported by Iowa Workforce Development Region 3 and 4, and is part of the statewide Employers’ Council of Iowa system. This employer’s group addresses workforce issues, and provides both educational and networking opportunities for employers and human resource professionals. Contact Bob Becker at
