DES MOINES – Iowa Workforce Development is hosting a unique recruitment event at the Mitchellville Correctional Institute for Women on May 19th. Inmates, within 2-3 months until their release, will attend the career fair and promote newly acquired skills. Frequently, inmates have received academic training, through a Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) program, for computer and other office related duties. Additionally, potential employees have received on-the-job training in food services; shipping and receiving; lawn and garden care; maintenance; and construction at the facility.

Employers may also receive an added bonus; the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), if the employee qualifies. WOTC entitles employers who hire qualified individuals a tax credit of 64% on the first twelve months of wages up to $20,000 paid for each qualifying employee.

The career fair will take place May 19th, beginning at 10:00AM. The Iowa Department of Corrections does require employers to complete a security clearance form which must be submitted by March 30th. Additionally, employers will be invited to a lunch and learn on April 21st for additional information regarding the security policies and processes at the correctional institute.
